Choose one manageable starting point
Start with a drawer, a shelf or one category. Choose a size you can comfortably finish and put away. There is no need to begin with the most meaningful belongings.
Make a real “decide later” space
A labeled box or shelf gives uncertain items somewhere to go without forcing a decision. Keep this separate from anything approved for donation or removal.
Ask what you want to preserve
It might be the object, the story, a connection to someone or a useful part of daily life. You can keep the item. If you want, write down its story or photograph it, but a photograph does not have to replace the original.
Let other people make their own choices
Do not give away another person’s belongings without permission. If several family members are involved, agree how requests and disagreements will be handled before sorting.
Finish with something settled
Put the keepers somewhere safe and usable. End with a clear surface or an organized category, even if other decisions are still open. A useful step does not have to be a dramatic transformation.
