Confirm decision-making and access
Identify the person authorized to arrange work and approve removal. Gather keys, access instructions and the contacts needed for the property. If authority is uncertain, get qualified advice before disposing of anything.
Protect important items first
Set aside photographs, correspondence, personal records, keys, devices and possible valuables for review. Do not leave these mixed with bags or boxes intended for removal.
Agree how family requests are handled
Use a shared list or a simple labeled area. Agree collection arrangements and record decisions. Make room for items that need further discussion.
Describe the practical constraints
Share stairs, parking, elevator requirements, access hours and any known hazards. Discuss the actual deadline and what must be completed by then.
Get the scope in writing
Confirm sorting, packing, collection, removal and the expected condition of the property at handover. Ask how disposal costs, donation acceptance and any separate resale agreement will be handled. This checklist is practical preparation, not legal or valuation advice.
